NFL Betting: Who's Hot and Who's Not Heading Into Week 4

NFL betting fanatics are always trying to find the best and worst teams in the game for both spreads and 'totals' to back on a regular basis. Here at BetVega, we have all the ins and outs of what NFL trends you should be looking at through Week 3.

ATS Annihilators

There are only two teams on the year that are still undefeated ATS, and the Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers both deserve that recognition. The Chiefs have won three games outright as underdogs, while the Steelers have two outright wins as pups and have an annihilation to their credit as well of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last weekend.

The third undefeated team might only be 2-1 ATS on the year, but we have to look at the Chicago Bears, especially since they were able to upset the Green Bay Packers on MNF this week.

Bankroll Busters

The only team that has yet to cover an NFL spread this year is the Carolina Panthers. This team has been an absolute joke and only has 14 points to show for its L/2 NFL betting battles overall.
The two 1-2 ATS teams that we are absolutely staying away from are the San Francisco 49ers and the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Niners are the biggest underachievers of the season at 1-2 ATS and 0-3 SU, while the Jags have only scored 40 points, the fewest in the NFC and third fewest in the league. Any guesses who the other two teams are? That's right. Carolina (32) and San Fran (38).

The 'Over'lords

The only 3-0 'over' team in the NFL this year left standing is the New England Patriots. Not only do the Pats have the only team in the league that is averaging 30.0+ points per game, but they have also allowed 82 points as well, the third most in the conference.

Both the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers are 2-0-1 towards the 'over', which earns them both spots on this list as 'Over'lords. For the Seahawks, the damage has been done offensively and on special teams, while San Fran has just been miserable defensively, allowing the most points in the league through three games with 87.

Bridge 'Under' Troubled Waters

The Green Bay Packers have only allowed 47 points in three games this year and are clearly the top 'under' team in the land at 3-0. However, the Minnesota Vikings are the lowest scoring team in terms of total point production in the NFL at just 43 points for and 38 against. It isn't shocking that they are the other 3-0 'under' team in NFL betting action.

The third 'under' squad to watch out for is the St. Louis Rams. With a rookie quarterback starting and an improving defense, the Rams are doing their job. They might only be 1-2 right now, but St. Louis is on the way up, and the only way that will continue is with more 'under' battles.

Colts vs Jaguars Thursday Night Football Prediction

Thursday Night football has the undefeated Indianapolis Colts traveling to Jacksonville to play the 7-6 Jaguars as 3 point favorites. The games only intrigue will be the Colts pursuit of perfection. At 3 points and against that is every bit as good as their 7-6 record indicates, the Colts should have absolutely no problem in walking out of Grass of Jacksonville Municipal Stadium 14-0. Jacksonville’s only hope will be on an over reliance of Maurice Jones Drew to keep this game close even so, it would have to be a career day to keep this game close. The Colts should have little trouble covering this game despite what past trends may indicate on how these teams play each other.

The last time these teams played was in week 1 of the season in which Indianapolis narrowly escaped with a 14-12 victory. This time, do not expect a similarly close game. 14 weeks later and the Colts have established themselves as easily one of the best all around teams in football. The Colts rank in the top 6 in almost every significant offensive category entering the last third of the season. The Colts ranks 6th in points per game at 27.6, 4th in yards per game at 384.4, 2nd in first downs with 23.4 per game, 1st in passing yards at 296.4 yards per game, and 3rd in yard per play at 6.1. The list goes on for the Colt offensive and in the last 3 games; the team has actually increased their point total to an average of 30 points per game, signifying that this team is nowhere near taking their foot off the pedal even after clinching home field advantage in the AFC. Leading this offensive is of course Payton Manning who is again putting up MVP caliber numbers.

The Jaguars will have little to counter the offense firepower of the Colts. Recent history suggests that these teams just somehow manage to play close games as with the last 4 games being decided by 7 points or fewer. I see this as more of an anomaly then a trend because the offense David Garrard leads in every bit as mediocre as their record. Jacksonville ranks 23rd in points scored and 15th in yards per game. The Indianapolis defense will counter this level of mediocrity with a defense that is 2nd best in points allowed at 16.2 points per game. Only when Jones Drew rushes for more than 76 yards has this team been successful as they are 6-2. Jacksonville may be able to expose the rushing defense of Indianapolis as it is currently ranked 17th in the league, giving up an average of 110.4 yards per game but in the last 3 games, that average has increased to nearly 119 yards per game.

The inability of Garrard to move the ball down field on a consistent basis makes this a simple game plan for Indianapolis. The Colts will surely overload the box and with Garrard only throwing 10 touchdowns this year, his weapons on the outside will be limited. Indianapolis will also be able to take advantage of their strong pass rush as they are ranked 12th in the league in sacks with 2.9 per game while the Jacksonville offensive line ranks 28th in the league in sacks allowed, giving up almost 3 per game. And for a team that emphasizes the run, Garrard is getting hit, pressured, hurried, or knocked down on way too many drop backs.

Indianapolis enters the game as 3 point favorites. This year, Indianapolis is 9-3-1 ATS. In the last 5 games Indianapolis is 4-1 ATS and 5-0 ATS in its last 5 games on the road. In head to head matchups, Indianapolis 3-7 ATS in its last 10 games when playing Jacksonville. This year, Jacksonville is 5-8 ATS. Jacksonville is 2-7 ATS in its last 9 games, 1-4 ATS in its last 5 games at home. The O/U for the game is listed at 43. This season both Indianapolis and Jacksonville are 6-7 O/U. The total has gone OVER in 4 of Indianapolis's last 6 games when playing Jacksonville and OVER in 6 of Indianapolis's last 8 games when playing Jacksonville on the road.

Thursday Pick: Stay away from the trends and use some common sense for this game, the trend better would see how close these teams have played in recent years and look for this game to be close with even a potential upset possible, not happening. Indianapolis is a significantly better team at this point in the season so 3 points is the easy cover. I also like the OVER, if weather is not a factor, Indianapolis should be able to put up points in bunches on the 20th ranked Jacksonville defense.

Patriots vs. Colts Sunday Pick

The NFL’s best rivalry resumes this Sunday when the 6-2 New England Patriots visit the undefeated Indianapolis Colts. New England enters the game riding a soft 3 game winning streak against some of the leagues lesser opponents, Tennessee, Tampa Bay, and Miami. Indianapolis enters the game winners of 17 consecutive regular season games, tied for 3rd longest in league history. Both teams are poised to make deep playoff runs this year again and with the winner of this game, either solidifying home-field advantage or opening the door for someone else to step in.

There is very little that separates these teams after 8 games in the season. The New England and Indianapolis are ranked 7th and 8th in total defense respectively and 1st and 2nd in points allowed. Offensively, these teams are ranked in the top 5 in total offense, points scored, and 1st and 3rd in sacks allowed. Both of these teams are so evenly matched up in most major statistically categories that focusing on the team statistics is almost pointless. This game will turn on the individual battles on both sides of the ball.

The Dwight Freeney factor could potentially pose a huge matchup problem for New England. Indianapolis is 5th in the league in total sacks; lead by pro bowl defensive end Freeney with 9.5 sacks. New England will counter Freeney without their best offensive tackle in Matt Light. Light has been suffering from a knee injury and in typical Bill Belichick fashion; I do not expect him to be officially “out” until game time. Sebastian Vollmer, a plodding 6-foot-8 rookie from Houston will have the unenviable task of stopping Freeney from getting a sack in his 9th consecutive game. With Freeney’s small size, low center of gravity, and explosive first step, Vollmer should have his hands full much of the day. New England will be forced to use tight ends and running back and potentially more max protect packages depending on the pressure throughout the game, limiting Brady’s passing options. Advantage goes to Freeney and the Indianapolis Colts.

The debate rages on every single year and is only magnified when these two teams play, Manning or Brady? Where do we start when trying to quantify which quarterback is “more great?” Is it there head to head records? Tom Brady is leading the head to head matchup 7-3 but Manning has won 3 of the last 4. What about Super Bowls? Brady has 3 rings compared to Manning’s 1. How about MVP awards? Manning has won 3 MVP Awards, 2003, 2004, and 2008 compared to Brady’s single award in 2007. Even this year these quarterback’s numbers are almost identical. Manning has thrown for 2545 yards, completed 70.6% of his passes, with 16 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. Brady has thrown for 2364 yards, completed 65.8% of his passes, with 16 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. So how does any of this information help us for Sunday? It really does little in helping me figure who will cover but for some of betters out there, these number will only reinforce the perception of how great one quarterback is over another and push them in that direction. What I can determine from these quarterback numbers is that neither team will be using the run to set up the pass. Expect lots of attempts and more probably, lots of yardage especially for Brady with Bob Saunders being out for the season with a torn biceps tendon. I want to lean towards Brady even if on the road because of the absence of Bob Saunders but if there is one quarterback who can win a game by himself, it is Payton Manning. I direct the reader back to week 2 in which Manning led the Colts to a victory over Miami while only possessing the ball on offense for 14:53. There really is no advantage to be had between the two quarterbacks.

Where the game will turn is in each team’s red-zone efficiency. Settling for 3 will not be enough with the way both of these teams can put up points. This year New England has been notoriously bad in the red zone, scoring only 44% of the time, good for 25th in the league. Indianapolis has been a little better, scoring 55% of the time, good for 14th in the league. However, in their last 3 games, Indianapolis has had some trouble putting the ball in the end zone, scoring only 45% of the time with the last two games coming at home against San Francisco and Houston. It could prove to be a troublesome trend as the Colts are scoring far less, settling for more field goals, and Payton Manning is being forced to throw the ball far more than most quarterbacks would like, 98 attempts in the last 2 games.

At 8-0, the sense of urgency is still far greater for Indianapolis than New England. I don’t believe Indianapolis can go into New England, in the middle of December, and pull out a victory. New England on the other hand, has proven they can win anywhere in any weather condition, at any time of the year. Indianapolis cannot say the same thing, they need New England or any other cold weather team to travel to the friendly confides of Lucas Oil Stadium.
Sunday Night Football Pick: The game has coin flip written all over it. It is easy to make an argument for both teams because of how evenly matched up they have been through the first 8 games. If the spread stays below -3 Indianapolis, take Indianapolis. If the spread climbs above -3 at any point, take New England.

Ok guys, I am back with another installment of terrible luck found on the college gridiron this past Saturday for certain football betting degenrates like myself.

As you all know, I am big believer in going against the "Public" when it comes to making money in the betting game. I know this not an original thought, but it has worked for me over the years. This past Saturday I saw mega public move on Oklahoma minus 18 points @ Kansas State. We are talking about 94% of the money on Oklahoma. These games do not lose my friends....I bet $10k on Kansas State.

Oklahoma jumps out big 28-7....not looking good. Before I know it is 28-28 and I am feeling confident. Did I mention that it was 28-28 about 2 minutes in the 2nd quarter...what? KSU then turns the ball over 3 times in a row and Oklahoma puts up a mind-boggling 55 points at halftime!!!

So I figure I am screwed and start to think about all the things I could have done with that $10k....by something nice for the wife, put it away for my soon to be born kids college fund, blow it on some strippers...you know, the fun stuff!

The 3rd quarter is very low scoring, providing only a TD for KSU and I start to think that a "back door" cover may be in the works as we head into the 4Q at 55-35. All I need is FG and I have salvaged my $10k and I can feel like a new man.

Oklahoma drives deep into KSU territory to start the 4Q and kicks a FG. Ok, no problem, 58-35 is the score and I just need TD to get the cover. KSU takes the possession on their own 29 yard for what I know will be the TD saving drive for $10k bet on the defenseless KSU Wildcats.

Betting Jinx #4 of the 2008 Football Season!

Get the tissues ready for anyone that bet Purdue this past weekend against mighty Penn State.

Most people had Purdue at +13 or +13.5. Some lucky bastards who bet the very last minute may have grabbed +14.

The jinx details:

Purdue kicker Chris Summers missed a 45-yard field-goal attempt wide right on the first play of the second quarter to leave the game scoreless.

Penn State responded with the game’s first scoring drive. Penn State running back Dan Lawlor was stopped on a third-and-goal from the 1, and Purdue appeared to have Penn State stopped on fourth down, Officials ruled that the fourth down play didn’t count because the previous play was being reviewed. The original call that Lawlor was short of the goal line stood, but Purdue fans were upset that the team’s key stop was taken away. On the fourth down play that counted, Clark scored on a quarterback sneak, and Penn State took a 7-0 lead.

Summers was wide left on a 36-yard field goal with 3:41 left in the second quarter. Penn State kept the ball for the rest of the half, and finished the second quarter with a 25-yard field goal by Kevin Kelly that increased the Nittany Lions’ lead to 10-0 at halftime. (Yahoo Sports)

Ok, Purdue bettors were still hanging in there. 2 missed FG's, one a relative chip shot, had to make them nervous though.

Penn State takes a 17-0 lead and the game looked lost. PSU drives down the field again looking to put the daggers in the heart of all Purdue bettors in the middle of the 4th quarter..... BUT WAIT....Purdue's defense steps up and holds PSU to a FG....score is now 20-0. All Purdue backers need is a back door TD and they will cover the number.

Enter back up QB Joey Elliot for Purdue. Ellioit leads Purdue down the field with exact precision and OH MY GOD they score a touchdown!!!! Holy Shit, Purdue is going to cover the spread and.....wait did that F%&#king kicker just miss the extra point?

Yes, now known as the worst kicker in the history of college football, Chris Summers, missed the extra point! Final score: 20-6

Betting Jinx #3 of the 2008 Football Season!

SD Chargers -8 @ Oakland Raiders Sunday September 28.

We all know Oakland is terrible, but lame duck coach Lane Kiffin does have some young talent that can keep a game close. The public was all over the Chargers Sunday, ranking as the most bet team by most Vegas sports books for the day.

Let set up the jinx....Oakland entered the 4th quarter with a 15-3 lead. The cover was looking great for those bettors who had the balls to drop some cash on this crew of under-achievers.

Oakland completely blows their lead but manages to tie the game up late at 18-18.
SD takes a 21-18 lead with a FG with just under 2 minutes to go. No big deal....Oakland will get the ball back and run the clock out with there possession or give the ball back to SD who will just take a kneel down. Then this happens:

The Raiders’ final comeback attempt was thwarted when Luis Castillo pressured Russell into an incompletion on fourth-and-5 from the Oakland 44 with 1:14 to go. Tomlinson finished it off from there with a 41-yard touchdown run. (Yahoo Sports)

First off, Russell is just terrible! What the hell is up with the Chargers not going into "victory formation" and taking a knee? Did they know the spread? It was ridiculous and painful for all idiot Raiders backers.

Here is a little more salt in the wound:

The Raiders could have had an even bigger halftime lead. But they settled for a field goal on the opening drive after moving the ball inside the 5 and had another touchdown called back on a holding penalty against Cornell Green. They settled for a field goal on that drive as well.

Betting Jinx #2 of the 2008 football season!

Michigan State @ Indiana this past Saturday. Michigan State came in as a 8.5 point favorite. Indiana has been awful in 2008, coming off a blowout loss to that MAC "Super Power" Ball State.

Alot of sharp bettors thought Indiana +8.5 points at home had a soild shot at the cover as MSU is a great team to bet against after playing Notre Dame.

The Jinx:

It was a wild, wacky game for the Old Brass Spittoon. There were two safeties, three replay reviews, a blocked punt, and Hoyer and Hoosiers quarterback Kellen Lewis each threw career-long touchdown passes.

But the strangest, and most important play, came late in the third quarter when Indiana’s backup quarterback, Ben Chappell, connected with Terrance Turner for a 97-yard touchdown pass that appeared to give Indiana the lead. Instead, right guard Cody Faulkner was called for holding in the end zone, giving Michigan State a safety and a 36-29 lead. (from Yahoo Sports)

Of course there was another quarter to play, but this game was Indiana's to win outright for sure! Covering the 8.5 points should have been an after thought.

NFL Week 3 Game Predictions.....who you got?

Kansas City @ Atlanta (-5.5). It's not going to be very often when you see Atlanta as a favorite this season. Although Tampa Bay handled the Falcons easily, the Bucs are a much better team than the Chiefs. The Falcons have a great running game, and I'll take QB Matt Ryan over QB Tyler Thigpen any day of the week. If Oakland can rush for 300 yards against KC, then the Falcons should roll in this game. Atlanta 27-13.

Oakland @ Buffalo (-9.5). Oakland may have had a great game, but no modern Al Davis team is going to be competitive. On the other hand, Buffalo has looked excellent, and has the run defense (and offense) that the Chiefs can only dream of. This could be a tougher game than the point spread indicates, but the home team should still win. Buffalo 30-20.

Tampa Bay @ Chicago (-3). When was the last time Chicago was favored in this match up? This will be an excellent test to see how good either the Bears or the Bucs really are. Brian Griese might have a little bit of revenge on his mind, but the Bears are a very solid team and all Kyle Orton needs to do is not make mistakes. My biggest concern here is Gruden's play calling, but I think Tampa is still a little bit better than Chicago right now, so the Bucs get the upset nod. Tampa Bay 20-17.

Houston @ Tennessee (-5). Neither team looks as good as most fans were expecting, but at least Tennessee is taking care of business. These are both tough defensive teams, and while Houston has more big time play makers, I think the home field advantage and better running game will give the Titans the edge in a hard fought game. Titans win, 19-13.

Carolina @ Minnesota (-3.5). This was a surprising line for me. Carolina is an exceptional looking team right now with two quality wins. Minnesota a lot more was expected out of and they've blew it twice against two quality opponents. Gus Frerotte is a much better player for this offense right now and makes the Vikings better. With that run defense vs. Steve Smith coming back this is a toss up as far as I'm concerned, but since it's at home I'll give the Vikings a nod. Minnesota 27-26.

Miami @ New England (-12.5). New England looks fine with QB Matt Cassel, and Joey Porter once again opens his big mouth…which traditionally means a three touchdown loss is going to follow. The Patriots are the much better team than the Dolphins, and it's going to show on Sunday. Patriots win 27-13.

The Eagles have been active in putting themselves in a position to instantly be competitive again. They were plagued by injuries last year, and should be a much better team than their record indicated. Watch the trade demands of CB Lito Sheppard. If he stays with the team and plays hard, the Eagles will be virtually impossible to pass against.

If McNabb can stay healthy, this offense can move. WR DeSean Jackson has a good chance of contributing right away as a number three, and even more important, can help reduce Brian Westbrook’s returns (and chance of being injured). Booker is a great fit for the wide open Eagles offense, and his hands and speed will give opposing defensive coordinators fits. There’s a lot of depth from the draft. If this team stays healthy, look for 10-6, tied for 2nd. If not, they still have a shot to go 8-8.

6 Things that will change to make going to a game that much better:

1. Bigger

For $100 a ticket, fans shouldn’t suffer vanilla architecture. When the 2009 NFL season kicks off, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones will have spent more than a billion dollars on a stadium that covers 30 total acres, seats 80,000, and features a 660,800-square-foot single-span roof structure, the world’s longest. The design, by architectural firm HKS, is an icon of big-stadium ambition. The roof can open in a mere 12 minutes. The luxury suites put well-heeled oilmen directly on the field, a first for NFL stadiums. And 180-by-50-foot center-hung HD scoreboards will show replays from multiple angles.

2. Rowdier

Once upon a time, players were relatively insulated from heckling. Now British soccer fans are about to enjoy designs that will enhance their powers of harassment. Liverpool F.C.’s new stadium will reproduce the old field’s infamous “Kop” fan section and add a single-piece steel roof that comes up and curves out over the sacred 76 rows (along with 20 added rows). The design ensures that taunts and team fight songs will blast down to the field and deafen opposing players.

3. More Interactive

The fans of tomorrow could be monitoring real-time stats, keeping a virtual scorecard, and ordering a hot-dog via a wireless screen built into each seat at Cisco Field, slated to be the suburban new home of the Oakland A’s. The design calls for interactive displays that show the fastest driving routes out of the park, traffic conditions and, most important, the shortest bathroom lines. Additionally, fans will get face time with popular players through virtual “autograph session” teleconferences.

This one excites me the most....talk about the ability for in-game betting!!!

4. More Flexible

“Legacy” venues are designed to transform into smaller, more usable stadiums once a major event ends. Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand, will shrink its capacity by 10,000 seats after hosting the 2011 Rugby World Cup. The flagship stadium for the London 2012 Olympics will initially seat 80,000 and then become a more community-friendly 25,000-seat stadium. The “ephemeral” architecture requires that the upper decks be disassembled and lower deck seating rearranged. Because large venues are costly to maintain, this trend could allow poorer countries to host major sporting events without busting the bank.

5. Greener

Stadium designers are consciously incorporating green design into their latest creations. Construction on the new, 50,000-seat, reportedly $250-million Shakhtar Stadium in the Ukrainian city of Donetsk left the surrounding wooded park intact. The stadium walls are also lower on one end to more efficiently light the field. By 2012, Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles will feature a “green necklace” that adds a proposed 2,000 more trees as well as drought-resistant plants to Chavez Ravine. To top it off, the stadium will become the first California ballpark to have waterless urinals, which will save millions of gallons of water per year.

6. Cooler

Dank, cavernous domes can ruin fans’ enjoyment of the game, so Tampa baseball will take a huge step toward becoming a modern franchise in 2012 when it leaves the hideous Tropicana Field (a.k.a. “the Pit”) for a 34,000-seat stadium overlooking Tampa Bay. Nautical themes abound in the 320-foot mast-and-arch design, which will use a system of cables to unfold the Tenara fabric roof like a sail. The roof will let in plenty of light, so the stadium is shaped to funnel sea breezes across the fans to keep them cool. Initial plans also called for piping chilled water through the concrete so the seats wouldn’t give off stored heat during night games.

Documentary Dispels Eagles Fans Negative Reputation

Last year a Chicago Bears fan decided to film his experience at a Bears Eagles game in Philadelphia. The basic idea of the video, is to really see if he would get killed by Eagles fans wearing a Brian Urlacher jersey at the Linc.

The home made film starts off bashing Eagles fans, and basically listing off every unfair negative stereo type of an Eagle fan you ever heard. Most of this nonsense comes from some douche bag radio jockey named Evan Roberts. He characterizes Eagles fans as ‘crazy, psycho, violent, drunks’. What else would expect from a New York Muts fan?

Despite the warning given by Evan(asshole) and others, the film maker Sami decides to go on with the trip. He first makes a stop to Baltimore to pick up his good friend who is an Eagles fan, and they then make their way to Philadelphia.

Once they arrived at the Linc, they took part in some good tailgating, and Sami got his fair share of the “asshole chant”. For those who don’t know any fans wearing an opposing fans jersey get greeted with the chant of “assss-hole… assss-hole”. This is done all in fun, and is more playful than threatening. Sami describes it as ‘70 thousand middle fingers’.

Outside of the asshole chant, nothing bad happened to Sami. The “mean Philadelphia thugs” drank beer with Sami, shook his hand, talked football, and joked with him. Sami was not beaten up, he did not have his life threatened, and he did not leave with any scars, bumps, or bruises. He left Philadelphia with a great experience, and a true respect for Eagles fans.

Let’s hope this can show people assholes like Evan Roberts that Philadelphia fans are not crazy, violent drunks.
